ROUND TABLE OF THE FEDERATION COUNCIL COMMITTEE

02/07/2025 Leonid Karpov took part in a round table meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building “Responsibility for obstructing the professional activity of a lawyer as a guarantee of the implementation of the principle of competition and equality of the parties.”

 

Representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation, the Federal Penitentiary Service, the Federal Chamber of Lawyers, representatives of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights and the legal community, scientists and practicing lawyers took part in the discussion.

 

Opening the event, the senator stressed the special importance of the independent status of the legal profession, which is a prerequisite for the full functioning of the mechanism for the protection of citizens’ rights, especially in the context of criminal proceedings.

 

The participants of the round table concluded that in order to effectively protect the rights of lawyers and their clients, it is necessary to amend legislation, eliminate contradictions in regulating the status of lawyers and ensure their rights in the digital environment. These measures will strengthen guarantees of the independence of the legal profession and improve the quality of legal protection of citizens.
